Many of our customers have inquired about the time lengths and current requirements in regards to obtaining a permit. Below you will find the general requirements and time lengths from each jurisdiction.

Once we receive your work order, Traffic Engineering Services needs one day to do an onsite visit to your project (for measurements, number of lanes, parking meters, etc.), a second day is needed to draw the traffic control plan, and a third day is required to package and submit the project.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

  Closures

All closures must be approved by the Fire Marshal prior to being submitted to TSA. As of last week, the Fire Marshal is saying that their approval process will take 5-7 business days from the date of submittal. I have attached a copy of the email sent to all of our clients regarding this new change. Once the Fire Marshal has approved the traffic control plan, the project is then submitted to TSA. TSA requires up to two weeks from the date of submittal for approval. Therefore, from the day we receive your project, it may take up to three weeks for approval.

  Lane Closures

Lane closures do not have to be approved by the Fire Marshal or TSA. From the day we receive your work order, we typically can obtain a lane closure permit in 5-7 business days.

  After Hours Permits

After Hours Permits are required for any work being performed before 9:00am or after 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. They are also required for any work being performed on Saturdays prior to 7:00am or after 7:00pm. They are also required for any work that is to be performed on Sundays. Currently, the District of Columbia is requiring a letter from the building owner stating why there is a need to perform the work outside of the regular working hours.

BALTIMORE

The City of Baltimore requires a minimum of 5 business days for approval of a permit from the date of submittal. They typically will only approve full road closures for weekend work. They require the building owner’s name and address.

ALEXANDRIA

The City of Alexandria generally requires 3-5 business days for approval from the date of submittal. They do not allow work to be performed prior to 9:00am unless a noise variance permit is applied for. They do not allow any work to be performed on Sundays.

ARLINGTON

Arlington County generally takes 5 business days for an approval once the project has been submitted. Arlington County also requires police assistance for extensive closures. Arlington County also requires the building owner’s information on their application. A copy of this application is enclosed.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Montgomery County typically takes 2 weeks for approval once the project has been submitted. They also require a certificate of insurance listing Montgomery County as a certificate holder. A sample certificate with their address is enclosed.

CITY OF ROCKVILLE

The City of Rockville generally takes two weeks for approval from the date the project was submitted. They also require a certificate of insurance with the City of Rockville listed as a certificate holder. In addition, they do require a bond which the amount is determined once the project has been submitted. They also require the owner’s information and signature on the application. A copy of this application is enclosed. A sample insurance certificate with their address is enclosed.

Within the last month, we have implemented a new procedure to help make our customers more aware of the status of their pending project, and hopefully to eliminate them having to call our office for an update. Each customer will be receiving a daily email from our office stating the status of each of their permits. If you do not receive the daily email, please contact our office.

Once we receive your permit, we will fax a copy to your office. If you do not receive your faxed copy, please contact our office.

The best way to insure that your Traffic Control Plan and Permit is correct is to fill out a permit work order entirely and email it or fax it to our office. The more detailed information your can provide, the better. If you are on the road, or out of the office, we will be more then happy to take the work order over the phone, but we prefer to have the work order completed by the salesman. Please include your email address on the bottom of the work order so we can notify you of the status of your permit.
